Job Announcement


Job Position:        Engineer II (Mid Level) or Engineer I (Entry Level)

Solar Energy Design, Inc. a Virginia corporation providing professional engineering services for over 26 years for consultation and design in the areas of mechanical (HVAC - heating, ventilating, and air conditioning); plumbing; fire protection; electrical service and distribution; lighting, and control and alarm systems for buildings is seeking a graduate engineer for a position as an entry level to mid level position in our Fairfax, Virginia office.

Solar Energy Design, Inc. is a Virginia corporation providing professional engineering services for consultation and design in the areas of mechanical (HVAC - heating, ventilating, and air conditioning); plumbing; fire protection; electrical service and distribution; lighting, and control and alarm systems for buildings.  Our current and recent past projects include commercial and residential projects from small scale remodelings to complete building designs including apartment buildings, shopping centers, schools, single family homes, multifamily and "group" housing, housing complexes, offices, restaurants, and churches.  These projects cover a range of building sizes from 500 to 80,000 square feet and total project sizes from 500 to 500,000 or more square feet.

Responsibilities of the position will involve design work for new construction and retrofit for commercial, institutional, industrial, and residential buildings in any of the following areas.  Work will involve active design work doing calculations and computer aided drafting (CAD), preparing documentation for reports, specifications, and communications.  The firm does not employ draftpersons or clerical staff.  All engineers perform their own CAD work and documentation preparation.

·                                Electrical and lighting systems

·                                Fire alarm and emergency alarm systems

Some field work is required for purposes of site visits to design or construction sites and for performing building inspections.  All such field work is normally local to the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and does not normally involve overnight travel.  The employee is required to have their own transportation for which costs are reimbursed for company travel.  The possibility of a small amount of out of town travel on a random schedule exists.

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in Engineering with a concentration in electric power or mechanical engineering is required.

Experience with desktop computers and engineering software is highly desirable.  Knowledge of AutoCAD, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, Microsoft Windows, and engineering applications is highly desirable.

Willingness to expand from the applicant’s current discipline to the other disciplines practiced by the firm is highly desirable.  Willingness to do continued study in the various building codes is essential.  Some knowledge of the any building codes is a plus, but is not essential.  For electrical engineers, some knowledge of the National Electrical Code is expected.

Passage of the Engineer in Training (EIT) Examination is highly desirable as is the intention of the applicant to pursue obtaining a Professional Engineer license in one or more of the states in which the firm practices.  Principals of the firm are currently registered as Professional Engineers in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and the District of Columbia.

Employee benefits:  The firm is extremely informal in organization and flexible in work schedules with emphasis on meeting client deadlines.  Normal work hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Normal office dress is business casual or casual at all times.  The firm recognizes all Federal Government holidays plus the Friday after Thanksgiving.  Employees receive two weeks paid annual leave in addition to holidays.  Depending on the employee’s experience, proven performance, and ability to meet production requirements, telecommuting and work-at-home are permitted.  Employees are considered professional, exempt, salaried employees and receive no overtime pay except for extraordinary work schedules requested by a client for which additional client billing is authorized.  Compensatory time is informally accounted for in lieu of overtime.

Compensation is dependent upon experience.  Starting salaries will be in the range of $49000 to $55,000.  Opportunities for advancement are high.  Some profit sharing can be expected but is not guaranteed.
